Mission Statement
The mission of the school library program is to empower students to be responsible information users and creators by providing a diverse collection of books and digital tools. A love for reading and learning is fostered by connecting the classroom to the world around us.
Vision Statement
The vision of the school library program is to be the central force, both physically and digitally, that drives and inspires a community of learners to build knowledge together. The library is a welcoming and safe place for everyone to explore, question, and test ideas freely. Honoring diverse perspectives through high-quality literature and research materials is evident and essential to learning. All students will thrive as they acquire the necessary 21st century skills of collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication through exceptional instruction and support.
Philosophy
The school library media center is an integral part of every student's education. The school revolves around the media center - the place that provides unlimited access to all kinds of information and allows learners to create new knowledge. All are welcome and encouraged to explore any topic or source of information they choose because the librarian will defend users' intellectual freedom. Students and teachers can use the library to connect classroom content to the outside world. The library is a space that can enhance each area of the curriculum and beyond. With the guidance of a certified librarian, the school community will flourish in personalized learning, literacy, digital information skills, and technology.
Preparing students to be life long learners is at the core of the library's purpose. This begins with a strong foundation in reading. The librarian provides important literacy skills based on students' needs and motivates students to read. Developing a collection with high-quality materials in a variety of formats that address students' interests and the school's curriculum is essential in supporting a love for reading and learning. Educating learners on how to find, use, create, and communicate information is necessary in the preparation of students success in their lives beyond the school. If every student is to be a successful global citizen, then equal access to print and digital resources as well as technology tools must be granted. The school librarian will advocate for this equity to ensure all students and teachers can be provided with the materials they need.
To be a lifelong learner, students must have a desire to seek new information. As an instructional partner and leader, the school librarian works closely with educators. Together, engaging and exciting projects are developed that encourage students to explore and connect with the real world. Teachers will find support in learning and instructing students about digital citizenship, so students can be responsible with the information they gain. With teachers, students, administrators, the community, and librarians working and learning together, the media center is truly the heart of the school.
